Dr Tony Worby

Tony is a Senior Research Scientist at the Australian Antarctic Division and leader of the Australian sea ice research program. His primary interest is the physical properties of Antarctic sea ice, in particular the thickness distribution of the ice and its interaction with the atmosphere and ocean.

Tony has a BSc (Hons) in Oceanography and Meteorology, and a PhD from the University of Tasmania. He has participated in 16 research voyages to the Antarctic since 1991 and published more than 45 scientific papers relating to Antarctic sea ice. In 2000 Tony was a Fulbright scholar to the USA where he spent 12 months working at NASA Goddard Space Flight Centre. He is actively involved in numerous international committees, including as co-Chair of the World Climate Research Program's 'Climate and Cryosphere' (CliC) project and co-Chair of the SCAR Committee on 'Antarctic Sea Ice Processes and Climate' (ASPeCt)

Tony has a passion for Antarctica and for sea ice. He was Chief Scientist on the IPY SIPEX expedition in 2007, which focused on the development of new technology for regional mapping of ice and snow thickness and validating satellite sensors, including radar and laser altimetry. Understanding the thickness of sea ice, and how it might be changing, is a key challenge for climate scientists, and one that Tony is focused on.
